RACHEL HEMMING BRAY
Rachel’s exhibition RESTORATION REVEALED was the result of nearly two years observing
the usually hidden world of picture conservation. Most of the pictures in the exhibition were made
on the spot at the highly respected studio of Bush & Berry. Often the figures she observed were
on the move. As a result people and hands sometimes appear more than once in the same picture,
creating an authentic feel of captured moments rather than posed images.
Artist Rachel Hemming Bray has always been absorbed by the challenge of capturing people at
both work and rest. She portrays people at their most natural. Over the years she has drawn and
painted many talented people working in Bristol. She was commissioned to draw at the BBC’s
Natural History Unit working with Sir David Attenborough, and at Bristol City’s Museum and Art
Gallery behind the scenes. Her works are in the Bristol Museum’s collection and Bristol University’s
Theatre Collection.

BUSH & BERRY CONSERVATION STUDIOS
Without conservators many of our greatest pictures would not be visible in their true glory.
Housed in a building that was once a workhouse chapel funded by the Gibbs family of Tyntesfield,
Alan Bush and Jonathan Berry undertake conservation and restoration work at the highest level
throughout the UK and beyond.
They work on a wide range of paintings, from small easel works to large scale wall and ceiling
paintings. Much of their work is for major public collections such as The National Trust, the Royal
Collections, or National Portrait Gallery.
They are also conservators for many private collectors in Bristol and the West Country.
